The marker mentoring program is designed to train Harris County Historical Commission board members on key issues associated with mentoring a narrative writer through the narrative process.
Even if you have mentored a narrative project to its finality, board members are invited to attend a training session to reacquaint themselves with changes and or polish their skills especially if they have not mentored a project in some time.
Mentoring workshops are usually held once each year and cover the following topics.
Purpose:
Mentor commitment of time
Mentor relationship with sponsor and or narrative writer
Funding
Chain of command
Time lines/Forms/Data Sheets/Marker Narrative:
Process - THC and HCHC steps, timing
Content - what is required for good history and documentation
Mechanics - footnotes, spelling, grammar, proofreading
Research Sources:
Libraries
County/city archives
Primary and secondary sources
Marker Dedication Ceremonies:
State/County/City official letters
Dignitaries/Speakers etc.
Marker placement/requirements
Timeline
Workshop dates and times are announced by email and during HCHC meetings.
