WASP Homecoming
WASP Homecoming
May 25, 2013 (Sat.) at Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas.
The National WASP WWII Museum honors the 1,102 women who flew during World War II. Called the “Fly Girls,” this “Forgotten Air Force,” were civil servants and denied benefits under the GI Bill and were not allowed to join groups such as the American Legion after the war. Fallen WASP (Women Air Force Service Pilots) were not even given a flag for their coffins. Because their records were sealed for 35 years, it was not until 1977 that they were finally granted veteran status.
A fund raiser is on to build a climate-controlled recreation of the Tower, and expansion to Hanger One (circa 1929) to house artifacts and a teaching theater to pass on the history of the Fly Girls to future generations. For more information, or to make a contribution, PO Box 456, Sweetwater TX 9556 (325) 235-0099. http://waspmuseum.org/
